Harley-Davidson Bagger Trend Killed The Cruiser (No Ones Laughing Now)
Harley-Davidson bagger models have taken over everything these days. It's hard to believe there was a time no one wanted a heavy touring Harley to cruise around town on. Harley-Davidson cruiser models have all but almost disappeared from the local bike nights and bar scenes, the parking lot is pretty much all Harley-Davidson baggers these days. If you ride a cruiser to bike night it might even be hard to find your bike in the sea of large Harley touring bikes out there. The custom bagger scene may have come and gone but the Harley-Davidson bagger models still remain insanely popular today.

Harley-Davidson Model Failure, FXDR Went Down in Flames
Переглядів 15 тис.День тому
Harley-Davidson Model that failed epically was the FXDR, from the start the FXDR did not live up to the hype and lacked everywhere it was supposed to excel. Harley-Davidson introduced the FXDR in 2018 in what appeared to be the replacement for the Vrod but nothing about it was really right. The performance was lower, the handling was arguably better but the ergonomics of the bike were absolutel...

I live in Daytona and I ride the harleys every year. They ran out of V-rods one year cause they all got wrecked in 3 days, my favorite one was a roadglide, my least favorite was the FXDR, it was uncomfortable, more to the liking of a much younger man. Plenty fast but wobley at very slow speed, of course some of that was me, Im a old guy and I have an 01 springer so thats what Im comparing other Harleys to. It seems the outboard shock models are easier to handle without the 300mm back tire. Then again what do I know.

The Bagger it's a good compromise between a full blown heavier and more $$$$$$ tourer (EG Ultra Classic Limited) and a stripper Softail (Heritage not included). I despise modified H-D's with a passion. (Choppers, Penny-Farthing Stretched Baggers, et al). Nothing's beats working and ordering parts for a stock UNMOLESTED vehicle. JMO. I performed PM's and repaired crashed M8 Big Tourers, Softails and the odd Sportster for close to 2 years when the M8 came out in 2017. Personally where I'm at now in my life, a Tourer it's what fills my needs. Still on the fence about an FJR1300, LeadWing, K1600GTL or RG Limited. My current ride it's a very basic and very spartan 2003 SV1000N. She's been very good to me but my needs have changed. I want every possible bell and whistle that can make highway droning as forgettable and crunchable as possible. I live in the state of FLAT and STR8 roads, A.K.A Florida, there's nothing to make road tripping a memorable event. I try to use as many backroads as possible to keep things different.

I really don't get the bagger craze. IMO a motorcycle is an escape from the world (phones, problems ,noise, music etc.) and it needs to be the visceral experience like riding a '66 FLH panshovel.. I cant understand how a loud stereo (so loud in fact that everyone in traffic within 40 feet of you are also hearing quite clearly) is a desired amenity on a motorcycle. I personally would be embarrassed to play loud music from any vehicle, especially a motorcycle. BTW , how much bigger does the alternator have to be just to run that thing? Heck, why don't we put rear wipers and Christmas lights while we're at it? Might as well be the biggest spectacle you can be if that's your goal. Another thought that crosses my mind... The demographic for Harley buyers these days are the convalescent members of the past demographics that bought the cruisers when they were younger. That rebel which still resides in these folks wants the comfort of a big touring bike now, but still wants a custom look hence the uptick in sales when the baggers took on a cooler custom look .This may explain where the craze came from. For me, I am 51 years old and Im still rocking a 95 softail , the last good year as far as Im concerned.

More touring bikes are on the road because the way they have been marketed as a do it all Swiss Army knife type of machine. Add in king of the baggers and now you have everybody and their grandma buying one so they can build their own “sport tourer”. Realistically there’s not that many people that have them that actually put down the miles necessary to need that much storage and long distance comfort items. On top of all that, the way Harley is doing things is that, if you want all the tech, you pretty much gotta go bagger. It’s one thing Indian did right was getting the ride modes, ride command and other tech down from the high dollar touring bikes to the standard cruisers (Chief) and smaller models (Scout). That way, if you want all the bells and whistles but don’t want a 800 plus pound machine, you can still get it on a smaller platform. And that’s nothing against Harley. Their most popular bikes are street glides and road glides, you have to put your money towards what’s selling the most and then trickle that down from there. So it makes sense that Indian brought the tech down to the non touring bikes first as the scout and chief sell more. I don’t see the trend changing until Harley starts offering something similar to the Indian 4 inch ride command on their cruiser line up. Once more tech and true updates start hitting the softail lineup and the sportster lineup branches out and has more to offer than that futuristic look that nobody asked for (looking at you sportster s) you’ll see a resurgence of cruisers because they’ll have what most people want without all the weight and price that a bagger or tourer has. Me personally I’m more into the Roadking and Springfield type bikes as they offer the capability to do long distance rides with fuel capacity, have great suspension, has bags for decent storage capacity but doesn’t have the big fairing out front so you get that classic cruiser feel. and if you want to do long distance and need wind protection all you have to do is throw a quick release windshield on it and boom you're good to go. i use my cardo for music and GPS so i don't need a fairing with a screen and speakers. but thats just me.

Thank you! I really appreciate the support! The catalogs really get muddy and don't offer a great explanation of what everything is and really does. Worst thing you can do is just pick something and then not be happy with it.

I dont care about style or popularity. I dont care about fitting in. I commute 90 miles a day 5 days a week to work and ride on my weekends. About 30,000 miles a year. I need a tool. And that tool to work effectively has to be mostly stock. Keep my work shit in my bags. I prefer my heritage for the warm months. My voyager for the cold months. Those fairings dont do you any favors in 110° heat

I did the installation and it worked jut fine. Major drawback. Du to the weight of the led insert and the rubber mounted light bucket on the Breakout, it throws an unbelievably strong flickering light cone on the street. Don’t look at it too long. It will drive you crazy. Any ideas for a remedy? I thought about perhaps bracing the headlight bucket with a piece of hard rubber against the fork cross brace.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo День тому

I didn't have any issues with the stock rubber gasket and fitment, some rubber bushings on the bucket would for sure help if you need to dampen the vibration further.

My old 98 FXSTC, which I loved, ending up sitting once I got my first FL. There is no comparison. The ride quality, seating position, leg position is way more comfortable. The addition of bags that look correct on the bike is a HUGE plus. Comfort, convenience and functionality are the reasons. There is the Street Glide jones … most of which never had a HD prior to their SG. The short shocks have to kill the ride quality… but I’ve never been on one so who knows. I’ll take my 2021 CVO Ultra Limited. For bar runs now I have a 2005 CVO FatBoy and love it.

It's the cruiser people just switching to baggers in their old age, I think it's more indicative of HD not attracting younger customers. That being said I'd love to have a roadglide ST but I don't have old man money to throw at a $30k bike

n order to carry all the stuff people suggest you carry when you ride, you need a bag. But one bag looks stupid. So another bag and tour back can help with groceries or beer hauling.

Never been real sure what a "cruiser" was supposed to be and I've been riding since the mid-60s; steadily since the early 70s. I've had a couple of bikes with hard bags -- and, yer right, I went that route when I was riding a lot of miles over a dozen or so year. The current crop of bikes has several features that are like fingernails on the blackboard to me (apes with a fairing, for instance... and blasting stereos ). I had an EVO Ultra for about 100K miles (only used the radio for the clock!!), and it was a good bike, but candidly -- wasn't as enjoyable to ride as my current TC softail... but to each his own; ride what ya got...

Apes with the fairing isn't my thing either but it's cool if someone else likes it, now the stereos that's a different story lol.

People like carrying things and backpacks on motos looks stupid. Also, the techies with GPS and music and all that. Killed off one of the road kings. You can tour fine with a cruiser but the tires will need a change if going on long trips.for most. Also, a sign of affluence now.to show you bought a factory 50k$ bike vs a $20k

They've proved to be really awesome motors in the ST version, you can pop an aftermarket cam in there and you pretty much have more than a 120R. 120R didn't come with a throttle body like the ST, but you don't really need a 64mm throttle body which is what they try to sell you.

One thing I am seeing more is disdain and outright disrespect from the bagger folks (and I say that owning two street glides) against the cruising bike crowd. I can't count how many times I've seen people trash talking dynas and soft tails in the way HD guys used to trash talk Japanese bikes.

It's kinda hard to call the new ones Geezer Glides anymore, they've really kind of turned them into pretty decent performing machines with the power and suspension these days. Especially when Harley did the ST Road Glide and Street Glide.

I don’t see myself buying a touring bike. I love my dyna I was in a certain outlaw lifestyle and they’re still popular in that crowd lol but I love my dyna and fxr. When I wanna go on a long distance (multiple states) I throw bags on it. Can’t beat the t sport style bags I got them on my dyna and fxr. I almost wanted a touring bike but I’m kinda leaning towards a low rider st.

Dynas are really comfortable, especially when you get them setup to fit you. Low Rider ST has been on my radar, hard t to find one new (which I can't afford lol) but even hard to find a deal on a used one. They want just as much for used ones as they do the new ones, but at least some of the used ones have the Fosgate stereo, exhaust, tune and maybe a cam.
